Servant Leadeship - What is this
Servant Leadership -
heard about this term during the SCRUM training. The SCRUM Master is
termed as servant-leader. Then came across the term again while reading
an article on the web. In this article, the author was talking about Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines, who believed his employees came first and he came last, pioneered the concept of “servant leadership.” Again use of the term servant leadership really made me thinking and decided to 'google' it further.
According to Wikipedia - Servant leadership is a philosophy and practice of leadership by Robert K. Greenleaf (1904–1990) and supported by many other leadership and management writers. Servant-leaders achieve results for their organizations by giving priority attention to the needs of their colleagues and those they serve. Servant-leaders are often seen as humble stewards of their organization's resources: human, financial and physical.
In layman terms, a leader who puts the focus on people because a motivated group of people can only reach set goals and live up to set of expectations.
In the AGILE Methodology, the SCRUM Master is responsible for his/her Development team. The SCRUM master are responsible for ensuring that the team adheres to the SCRUM theory, rules and practices. SCRUM Master also works as a liaison with the outside world to understand the stakeholders' expectations and trying to maximize the value of interactions among all the concerned parties. Hence, SCRUM master acts as a servant-leader to the team.
It was an eyeopener to learn about a new term....hopefully will have more terms to share going forward.
